Electric River Logistics Gain Traction From China to Europe

China is leading the development of electric river logistics, recently launching the world’s largest electric container ship, while Europe is pursuing smaller-scale projects. In France, the electric barge Evoli began service in Lyon, transporting up to 143 tons per trip and reducing road traffic. Evoli utilizes a 100 square meter solar panel array and can operate for six hours on a single charge.

The Netherlands is also pioneering electric river transport with a barge for Heineken that uses swappable battery containers to maintain continuous operation. These initiatives demonstrate the potential of waterways for zero-emission freight transport, but require investment in infrastructure.

Italy currently lags behind, with limited pilot projects and underutilized waterways, despite having companies with relevant expertise like Transfluid. The success of these European projects relies on public funding, as demonstrated by the 3.25 million euro investment in Evoli.
