Italy Proposes Fund for Forteto Abuse Victims

Fratelli d'Italia presented a bill in Florence, Italy to establish a solidarity fund for victims of abuse at the Forteto center. The proposed fund aims to provide financial redress to individuals, both minors and adults, who suffered physical and psychological abuse at Forteto but were previously excluded from compensation through Italian and European courts.

The initiative builds on prior efforts by the Meloni government, which recently acknowledged state responsibility and offered compensation to some victims who pursued legal action in Genoa. This new proposal seeks to extend that right to all victims, regardless of whether they have filed lawsuits.

The bill’s sponsors hope to expedite its passage by attaching it as an amendment to existing legislation. They are also working to incorporate remaining funds from the liquidation of the Forteto Foundation and assets from the current Fortemugello cooperative into the compensation pool. The goal is to swiftly publish a call for applications and distribute funds to those who have not yet received adequate compensation.
