Italy Boosts Gas Supply Despite Global Instability

Italy increased its gas consumption by 3% in June 2026, primarily due to a surge in demand from power plants, an 11% increase year-over-year. The country has demonstrated resilience in a volatile geopolitical landscape by diversifying its gas sources and leveraging a highly interconnected infrastructure.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has become a key supply source, accounting for 32% of gas entering the national grid in the first half of 2026, a 5% increase despite global disruptions. Italy boasts ten entry points for gas via pipelines and regasification terminals, making it the most interconnected country in Europe for gas supply.

Gas storage levels have surpassed 70%, nearly 20 percentage points above the European average, thanks to infrastructure managed by Snam. Snam’s dispatch center near Milan continuously monitors and coordinates the entire national gas network, managing over 33,000 kilometers of pipelines. This robust system ensures supply continuity and balances demand with available resources, even during crises.
