Lights and Sound Deterrents Effectively Repel Wolves in Italy

Researchers in Trentino, Italy documented a wolf immediately retreating after being exposed to acoustic and luminous deterrents on July 11, 2026. The Adamello Brenta Natural Park Authority captured the event on infrared cameras at a mountain pasture near Tione.

This footage confirms the effectiveness of these non-violent, motion-sensor activated devices which the park began testing in 2025 at Malga Plan and Malga Zerli, areas previously affected by wolf predation. The park’s data suggests these deterrents create the impression of human presence, discouraging wolves from approaching livestock.

This offers a potential alternative to culling or selective hunting as a means of protecting mountain economies. The park notes that a universal solution doesn’t exist, as each pasture requires a tailored approach combining these deterrents with existing methods like electric fencing and livestock guardian dogs. Future efforts will focus on refining these personalized prevention projects to ensure both farmer safety and alpine biodiversity.
