Seahorses Return to Bay of Naples After Habitat Restoration

Scientists at the Gaiola Submerged Park in the Bay of Naples, Italy, observed the return of the Hippocampus guttulatus seahorse after years of absence. The protected species had disappeared due to habitat destruction, but has reappeared within restored Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. A restoration project initiated in 2023, involving the transplantation of seagrass cuttings donated by the Regno di Nettuno Marine Protected Area, successfully re-vegetated previously degraded seabed.

This repopulation follows earlier signs of ecosystem recovery including juvenile fish and invertebrates. The presence of the seahorse, which anchors itself to the seagrass, confirms the restored health of the ecosystem.

The Gaiola park also contains unique coral reefs and Roman archaeological remains, but remains vulnerable to pollution from sewage discharge during storms, requiring urgent infrastructure improvements from local authorities.
