New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo Faces Immediate Threat

Scientists in the Democratic Republic of Congo have identified a new species of monkey, Colobus congoensis, after a decade of observation and analysis. The primate, locally known as Likweli or kasaba nkoni, inhabits a limited area of approximately 1,700 square kilometers between the Lomami and Lilo rivers.

Researchers confirmed its distinct status through genetic analysis of specimens confiscated from hunters, alongside field observations of its unique black coat, orange-cream markings around the mouth, and vocalizations. The discovery, only the fifth new monkey species identified in Africa in the last 75 years, is immediately tempered by conservation concerns.

Due to its restricted range, the team proposes classifying Colobus congoensis as endangered, pending official assessment by the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss from expanding settlements and potential hunting pressure pose significant threats to the species’ survival. Conservation efforts will focus on protecting the Lomami National Park and engaging local communities in safeguarding the monkey and its forest home.
