Baby Auckland: 200-Year-Old Skeleton Found with 1910 Newspaper

Workers in Bishop Auckland, England, uncovered the remains of a baby beneath the floorboards of a Victorian-era building on July 29, 2024. The skeleton was wrapped in a copy of the British newspaper The Umpire, dated June 19, 1910.

Initial investigations focused on the early 20th century, speculating the death may be linked to social stigmas surrounding unwed mothers. However, radiocarbon dating revealed the infant lived between 1726 and 1812, predating the newspaper by over a century.

This discrepancy has turned the case into a historical mystery. Investigators found a brown string wrapped three times around the baby’s neck, prompting consideration of foul play, though a definitive cause of death remains elusive.

DNA analysis confirmed the baby was male, but further identification proved impossible due to the degraded genetic material. Authorities are now examining historical records for building renovations and past residents, attempting to explain how remains from the 18th century ended up concealed with a 20th-century newspaper. The investigation continues, with a new hearing scheduled for September 17, 2026.
