Terra Nova Wreck Discovered Off Greenland Coast

An international team located the wreck of the Terra Nova, the ship used by Robert Falcon Scott during his 1910-1913 Antarctic expedition, in the frigid waters off Greenland. The British whaling vessel carried Scott and his crew to the Antarctic with the goal of reaching the South Pole. Though Scott’s party reached the pole in January 1912, they discovered Roald Amundsen’s team had arrived five weeks earlier and tragically perished on the return journey.

After returning from the Antarctic, the Terra Nova resumed whaling duties before being repurposed during World War II to supply Allied stations in Greenland. It sank in July 1943 after sustaining damage from ice and being scuttled to avoid becoming a navigational hazard.

Researchers used advanced underwater technology to create a detailed 3D model of the wreck, documenting its condition and preserving a piece of exploration history. The digital model will be made publicly available for research and education.
