Why this is here: Hilton’s election to lead the commission marks a symbolic political shift within a Brazilian parliament currently dominated by conservative forces.

Erika Hilton became the first transgender lawmaker to chair Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies’ Commission on Women. She represents the Socialism and Liberty Party (Psol). Hilton describes herself as a Black, transgender woman from the periphery.

Hilton grew up in São Paulo and experienced homelessness and sex work before becoming an activist. She then entered politics, becoming the most-voted councilor in the country in 2020. Two years later, she won a seat in Parliament as a prominent voice for the left.

Her appointment sparked debate about representation. Hilton stated she will “always be a woman” in response to criticism.

She plans to strengthen shelters for abuse victims, fight political violence against women, and promote inclusive healthcare policies. Brazil averages four femicides daily.
