Gibraltar Removes Border Fence with Spain After Decades of Dispute

Spain and the United Kingdom removed the border fence between Gibraltar and Spain overnight, establishing free movement between the two territories after years of contention. The removal follows an agreement between the European Union and the UK. Thousands of people cross daily between southern Spain and Gibraltar and will no longer encounter a physical border.

Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, is strategically located near Morocco at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Spain ceded the territory to Britain in 1713 but has maintained its claim to sovereignty, periodically causing tensions. The border was fully reopened in 1985 after being closed by the Franco regime in 1969 following a Gibraltarian vote to remain under British rule.

The agreement does not resolve the disputed status of Gibraltar, but it avoids a hard land border with full passport controls. This is crucial for Gibraltar’s economy, which relies on the approximately 15,000 Spanish workers who enter daily. Officials have installed real-time facial recognition cameras and increased security measures as the territory transitions to a “digital fortress.”
