Scholars Critique Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ for Missing Key Themes

Translators Emily Wilson and Daniel Mendelsohn are questioning Christopher Nolan’s cinematic adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey”, despite acknowledging his visual skill. Wilson, whose 2017 translation inspired Nolan, feels the film prioritizes spectacle over essential themes of the epic poem.

Mendelsohn, also a translator and critic, argues Nolan remade Odysseus in his own image, transforming the cunning hero into a brooding figure similar to characters in “Memento” and “Oppenheimer.” Both scholars noted omissions, such as limited roles for key gods and a diminished portrayal of Penelope, and criticized what they see as inconsistent messaging regarding war and courage.

Despite their critiques, both recommend seeing the film on the big screen, with Wilson stating it’s an enjoyable experience. The release of Nolan’s film has boosted sales of various “Odyssey” translations, including Wilson’s, which reached the top five on Amazon.
