Ukraine Opens New Children’s Hospital Near Poland

Sunflower Network, a U.S.-based nonprofit, recently opened a 15-bed pediatric hospital wing in Brody, Ukraine, a city 50 miles from the Polish border. The facility, named Project Horizon, is part of the Brody Central City Hospital and was designed to address the country’s strained healthcare system following damage and destruction during the war with Russia.

Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure relies heavily on aging Soviet-era hospitals. Sunflower Network identified a need for new facilities and partnered with architectural firms and Climatic, a Polish prefab manufacturer, to construct the wing using a modular, off-site approach. This method cut construction time in half and addressed labor shortages caused by the war.

The hospital features private rooms, modern equipment, and a design informed by trauma-informed care principles. Designers prioritized natural light and calming colors to create a welcoming environment for children and families. Sunflower Network intends for Project Horizon to serve as a prototype for rapidly rebuilding healthcare infrastructure in Ukraine and beyond.
