Komodo National Park: A Reef Manta Stronghold

Researchers confirmed Komodo National Park in Indonesia holds the world’s largest documented population of reef manta rays. A 2022 study identified at least 1,085 individuals within the park’s waters. Komodo’s waters provide critical habitat for the reef manta ( Mobula alfredi) amidst increasing pressures from fishing, tourism, and climate change.

The park functions as a key refuge for the species, supporting a substantial portion of the global reef manta population. However, continued monitoring and conservation efforts are vital to protect these rays.

The future health of this population will depend on managing these external pressures and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Komodo ecosystem.
