Iceland’s Vörður Insurer Now Covers Fertility Treatments

Þórdís Lind Leiva of Vörður, an Icelandic insurer, announced the company will include fertility coverage in its standard health insurance plans. The coverage provides both financial support for treatments and access to counseling if challenges arise during the process. Vörður estimates roughly one in six people experience infertility.

Jenny Elisabet Eriksson, a board member with Tilvera, an Icelandic organization for people experiencing infertility, notes the increased support will make a large difference for many. She says some individuals spend up to 20 million Icelandic króna on fertility treatments, and all financial assistance helps.

Vörður, part of Arion bank, will also offer special loan terms to those with existing Vörður health insurance who need fertility assistance. While this expands access, the long-term effects of fertility treatments and the emotional toll remain areas for continued study.
