Why this is here: Sesar A. noted the long-term resilience of the Cuban people, stating they “have been in a struggle and are used to fighting and standing together.”

Hundreds of aid workers from 33 countries are delivering humanitarian assistance to Cuba. The group includes members of aid organizations, friendship societies, unions, and political movements. Sesar A., chairman of the Iceland-Cuba Friendship Association, is in Havana with the convoy.

The aid effort consists of a ship sailing from Mexico and an airlift from Europe. The primary goal is to support Cuba’s healthcare system.

The island nation has faced a prolonged crisis, with many residents experiencing power outages. Approximately 10 million Cubans were recently without electricity.

Cuba’s energy grid relies heavily on oil, but deliveries have been limited since the start of the year due to a U.S. embargo. Despite these challenges, Sesar reports that Cubans are resilient and accustomed to hardship, prioritizing essential services like healthcare and education.
