Greek Court Awards Doctor €20,000 for Burnout

A court in Rethymno, Crete, awarded pathologist and infectious disease specialist Eleni Ioannidou €20,000 in damages after finding the hospital contributed to her burnout. Ioannidou previously directed the hospital’s pathology department but resigned, publicly stating that working conditions caused her complete physical and mental collapse.

The court ruled that demanding work schedules combined with the hospital administration’s failure to address her repeated requests for more staff significantly contributed to her condition. Ioannidou filed two lawsuits, one seeking compensation for 180 days of unpaid leave due to understaffing and another for the moral damage caused by the stressful work environment.

The ruling sets a precedent for addressing working conditions in Greek public hospitals and acknowledges burnout as a legitimate consequence of systemic issues. Ioannidou shared the decision on social media, describing it as a victory against the hospital.
