Why this is here: The study’s claim of 12,000-year-old pyramids centers on the absence of royal mummies within the structures, challenging the conventional understanding of the pyramids as pharaohs’ tombs.

A Catalan researcher proposes the Giza Pyramids could be as old as 12,000 years—predating ancient Egyptian civilization. The study, published online, suggests Egyptians may have inherited existing structures rather than building the pyramids from scratch. This claim would revise the accepted timeline of construction to thousands of years earlier, around 10,000 BCE.

The researcher cites a lack of pharaohs’ mummies inside the pyramids, precise stonework beyond tools of the time, and water erosion patterns as evidence. Scientists generally attribute pyramid construction to the Old Kingdom period, around 2600–2500 BCE, based on archaeological evidence linking them to known rulers and construction techniques.

The study has gained traction online, particularly in Spain, where interest in history and archaeology is high. While not yet peer-reviewed, the research revives long-standing questions about the pyramids' origins and fuels alternative theories surrounding their construction.
