Descendant of Greek War Hero Kanaris Reflects on Legacy

Why this is here: Stamatis Kanaris shared a detail about his ancestor blessing the hook used in the attack on Chios, revealing a personal connection to the sacrifices made during the Greek Revolution.
Stamatis Kanaris, a descendant of Greek Revolution hero Constantine Kanaris, spoke about his family’s history. He clarified he directly descends from George Kanaris, Constantine’s brother and a fellow fighter in the Greek Revolution. Both brothers, along with Anastasios Kanaris, fought under the flag of Psara.
Kanaris described March 25th as a day of joy, emotion, and family tradition. He noted Constantine Kanaris gained renown as a fireship commander, with his fame extending beyond Greece.
Before the Chios operation, Kanaris reportedly blessed the hook he would use at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Psara. He then crossed himself and said, “tonight you will die,” demonstrating his dedication to the cause. Kanaris stated that Greece owes its existence to that generation of great Greeks.
