Europe Approves First Weight-Loss Pill

The European Commission approved Wegovy, an oral semaglutide medication, making it the first GLP-1 receptor agonist in pill form authorized for weight management within the European Union. The decision follows a positive assessment from the European Medicines Agency. Previously, GLP-1 treatments required injections, creating a barrier to access and adherence.

This approval recognizes obesity as a chronic disease needing medical intervention beyond diet and exercise. Wegovy mimics the effects of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, increasing feelings of fullness and regulating blood sugar.

The EMA clarified that Wegovy will be available only with a prescription and in conjunction with dietary changes and exercise, preventing its use for purely cosmetic weight loss. Clinical trials demonstrated an average weight loss nearing 17% of total body weight, with approximately one in three patients losing 20% or more.
