Libyan Archaeologists Unearth Ancient Greek Hippodrome

The French Archaeological Mission announced significant archaeological discoveries in Apollonia, Libya, revealing new details about the ancient city and its importance in the Greek and Mediterranean worlds. Recent excavations in Susa, the site of ancient Apollonia, uncovered an ancient theater with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea, sacred complexes, and a uniquely preserved Greek hippodrome.

Professor Vincent Michel, leading the mission since 2011, described the hippodrome as unparalleled, noting the absence of similar structures in Cyrenaica or across the wider Mediterranean region. The findings suggest Apollonia held a prominent geopolitical position and may require a reevaluation of its historical status.

The French Archaeological Mission has worked for decades in Libya, focusing on Greek and Roman remains to preserve the cultural heritage of the region. Researchers hope these discoveries will establish Apollonia as a leading archaeological center and provide valuable insight into ancient Greek presence in Cyrenaica.
