From Punishment to Paradise: Gyaros Island Becomes Seal Sanctuary

Gyaros Island in Greece, once a place of exile and political repression, is now a vital refuge for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. For decades, the island was off-limits to the public, serving first as a place of exile and later as a naval firing range. This long period of limited human activity unintentionally created ideal conditions for a unique ecosystem to flourish.

Around the year 2000, scientists noticed a mother monk seal and her pup on an open beach, sparking further research. They discovered a colony of approximately 70 adult seals around Gyaros, potentially the largest in the Mediterranean. These seals are notably giving birth and raising their young on open beaches, a rare behavior due to human presence on most Mediterranean coasts.

Officially recognized in 2019 as the first Marine Protected Area in the Aegean, Gyaros now has strict fishing regulations and regular patrols. Experts caution that illegal fishing, invasive species, and potential management changes still threaten the ecosystem, and advocate for the creation of more protected areas to ensure the survival of the Mediterranean monk seal.
