Greek Banks Donate €160M to Revitalize Universities

Four major Greek banks, Alpha, Eurobank, National, and Piraeus, will donate €160 million to renovate infrastructure at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the National Technical University of Athens. The announcement came during a meeting at the Maximos Mansion with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and university rectors.

The National Metsovion Polytechnic (NTUA) will receive €25 million of the total, prioritizing the restoration of the historic Gini Building. The initiative aims to create modern and accessible facilities at the three universities, including renovations of classrooms, student housing, and public spaces.

The Prime Minister emphasized this is a decisive step in upgrading public universities, while the Minister of Education highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Greek universities through increased public funding. The NTUA plans to revitalize the surrounding area of the Gini Building through its restoration, creating a space for education, culture, and innovation. The university also reported advancements in computational infrastructure with the installation of two supercomputers.
