Greece Establishes AI Safety Framework for Schools

Greece’s Ministers of Education, Sofia Zacharaki, and Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, jointly introduced a national framework for safely using Artificial Intelligence in schools. This initiative establishes clear rules for AI use, prioritizing student protection against misinformation, harmful content, and misuse of the technology.
The framework prohibits practices like creating deepfakes without consent, fabricating sources, and unauthorized AI application development. Automated student or teacher evaluation is also forbidden.
Personal data protection receives significant emphasis, with restrictions on collecting identifiable information like names, photos, or health data. AI tools cannot be used during exams unless explicitly permitted, and student work must not be generated entirely by AI.
Each school will appoint a “AI Usage Coordinator” to oversee implementation and ensure data security. Annual training will be provided to educators and students on responsible AI use, and all AI systems will undergo data protection impact assessments.
