Greece recorded the second largest reduction in traffic fatalities within the European Union in 2025. Official data from the European Commission show Greece’s decrease surpassed the EU average of 3%. The country saw 517 road deaths, a 22% drop from 665 in 2024 and the lowest number since 1963.
This improvement stems from a comprehensive road safety strategy. The strategy includes a stricter traffic code, increased police controls, and technology for digital monitoring. Improvements to infrastructure, such as the Patras-Pyrgos highway, and expanded public transportation also contributed.
Ministers highlighted the government’s commitment to road safety. They emphasized ongoing infrastructure upgrades, institutional initiatives, and driver behavior changes. Further projects are planned for roads like the VOAK and the E65 highway to maintain this positive trend.
