Odysseus Worshipped as a God for 1000 Years

Archaeologists in Ithaca, Greece, have uncovered evidence suggesting Odysseus was worshipped as a hero, and potentially a deity, for around 1,000 years by ancient Greeks. New findings include coins bearing his image, inscribed artifacts, and remnants of a public sanctuary.

This indicates the mythical king of Ithaca was far more than a literary figure to the ancient inhabitants. The discoveries illuminate a world where mythology, religion, and collective identity were intertwined.

While stories of Odysseus circulated orally for centuries before being written down, a form of worship seemingly began as early as the 9th century BC, gaining prominence with the written epics around the 8th century BC. The sanctuary, believed to be the “Odysseion,” wasn’t solely a religious space.

It functioned as a public center where citizens gathered, suggesting Odysseus’s influence permeated daily life. Researchers are continuing to excavate the site and analyze the findings to further understand the scope and nature of this ancient devotion.
