China Joins Greek Archaeological Dig

A team from China and Greece’s culture ministry began excavating a site in Greece. This marks the first time China participates in on-site digs within a major ancient Western civilization. Previously, Chinese researchers primarily studied ancient Greece through texts and collections created by Western scholars.

The project addresses a gap in Chinese archaeological knowledge. For years, Chinese teams largely worked within China’s borders. Recent government backing now funds collaborations in Central Asia, South America, and Egypt.

The dig aims to move beyond secondhand accounts of ancient Greece. The Chinese Social Sciences Academy notes a reliance on materials compiled by others.

Researchers hope direct excavation will yield new primary evidence. The work continues as they seek to expand understanding of ancient history.
