Taiwan's Tallest Tree Mapped Using Laser Technology

A team of scientists in Taiwan mapped the island’s largest trees and identified a Taiwania cryptomerioides reaching 84.10 meters as the tallest. They used LiDAR technology, a laser-based measurement tool deployed from the air, combined with a citizen science program and on-site climbing expeditions in challenging mountain valleys.

The research created a database detailing these giant organisms and their ecological importance. The scientists hope this data will contribute to a greater understanding of these trees and inform conservation efforts.

This mapping project builds on similar efforts to document large trees in other regions, providing a comparative dataset for ecological studies. The team intends to continue expanding the database and researching the role of these trees in Taiwan’s ecosystem.
