Mongolian Throat Singing Gains Global Following

Renowned Mongolian musician Batzorig Vaanchig in Ulaanbaatar promotes khoomei, a distinctive form of throat singing, through performances, recordings, and international collaborations. He blends traditional methods with digital platforms to broaden its reach and preserve the ancient art.

Vaanchig regularly performs in Mongolia’s capital, often accompanied by the horsehead fiddle, and his music appears in various media including film, documentaries, and video games. UNESCO recognizes khoomei as an important part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage.

While younger Mongolians demonstrate increasing interest in traditional culture, Vaanchig emphasizes the need for continued efforts to ensure its survival. Throat singing faced potential decline but has recently seen a resurgence thanks to artists dedicated to both preservation and global introduction.
