Bolivia Confirms Clouded Tiger-Cat as New Species

Biologists in Bolivia’s Carrasco Park, near Cochabamba, have officially confirmed the clouded tiger-cat, or Leopardus pardinoides, as a distinct species. The nocturnal feline was first sighted in the region in February 2024, prompting further research that corroborated its unique characteristics.

Scientists used improvements in camera trap technology and analyzed differences in spot patterns, body measurements, and genetics to differentiate it from other tiger-cat species. The clouded tiger-cat typically inhabits humid Andean forests at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters and weighs less than three kilograms.

Colombia holds 40% of the species’ known distribution, with additional populations in Central America. Researchers estimate the tiger-cat family’s overall range has shrunk by 50 to 68% due to habitat loss from agriculture and deforestation, placing all three known species, including the newly identified clouded tiger-cat, on the vulnerable list for extinction. Conservation efforts are now focused on understanding and protecting this elusive feline.
