Spain Publishes List of Argentine Dictatorship Victims

Why this is here: The list includes multiple family members, reflecting how entire families fled Francoist Spain only to face further tragedy under the Argentine dictatorship.
The Spanish Government released a list of 307 Spanish victims of Argentina’s 1976-1983 dictatorship. The announcement coincided with the 50th anniversary of the coup. The list includes 100 women and 207 men, many of whom were emigrants or descendants of exiles.
Minister of Territorial Policy Ángel Víctor Torres stated that repression occurs wherever dictatorships exist. He hopes acknowledging these events will discourage future generations from supporting authoritarianism. The published list includes 286 disappeared persons and 21 murdered individuals.
Consuelo Castaño, president of the commission of Spanish disappeared persons in Argentina, secured this commitment from the minister during a visit to Buenos Aires last October. Castaño herself was imprisoned for four years and her husband remains on the list of victims. The list also includes Azucena Bermejo, a pregnant student, and her family.
