Museums Shift Focus to Community Needs

Around 530 BC, a priestess princess opened what is considered the first public museum in Ur, Iraq. Today, museums worldwide are undergoing a transformation, moving beyond simply displaying objects to fostering engagement and serving broader societal needs. Sandro Debono notes the International Council of Museums now prioritizes inclusivity and community participation in its definition of a museum—a change from previous definitions.

Latin America has long embraced participatory museum practices, with a focus on empowering marginalized communities. Now, institutions in Europe and elsewhere are adopting similar approaches, often linking funding to social relevance. The National Museum of Singapore offers dance and art classes for seniors, while the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles hosts poetry readings and legal panels.

However, many museums acknowledge that superficial engagement isn’t enough. An impact study of a youth program at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam found long-term, inclusive programs are essential for attracting diverse audiences. The work of redefining museums continues, with a focus on deeper, more meaningful participation.
