US Bureau of Labor Statistics Gains Nominee After Political Interference

The US Senate committee advanced Brett Matsumoto’s nomination to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics, filling a position vacant for nearly a year. Former President Donald Trump fired the previous commissioner after the BLS released revised job creation numbers he deemed inaccurate. Economists estimate the resulting uncertainty cost the US economy around $20 billion due to production and employment delays.

Matsumoto affirmed the BLS needs independence from political interference while acknowledging challenges like declining survey response rates. He also plans to explore alternative data sources and improve communication with data users.

Despite most Americans recognizing the importance of federal statistics, only around half currently trust the numbers, reflecting a broader decline in social trust. Experts emphasize maintaining the integrity of public data is essential not just for economic stability but also for a functioning democracy.
