UN Chief Calls for Inclusive AI Governance

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged governments and technology companies in Shanghai to collaborate on artificial intelligence development, ensuring benefits extend to all nations. He warned that without international cooperation, AI risks exacerbating global inequalities and hindering sustainable development. Guterres described AI as a potentially transformative opportunity for the 21st century, but cautioned against governance limited to a few powerful entities.

The UN has recently established initiatives like the Global Digital Compact and an international scientific panel to promote AI governance and facilitate knowledge sharing. Guterres announced plans for a Global Fund for AI and a network to build AI capacity in developing countries, emphasizing the need to address disparities in access to technology and expertise.

He outlined three priorities: expanding capacity in developing nations, establishing international safety standards, and promoting environmental sustainability in AI operations. The UN chief stressed the importance of protecting human rights and maintaining human control over critical decisions made by AI systems.
