Starlink V5 Receiver: Smaller Size, Lower Power Use, Slightly Slower Speeds

SpaceX released Starlink V5, a new satellite receiver that is smaller and more energy efficient than its predecessor. The new receiver measures 40 by 30 centimeters and weighs just over one kilogram, a reduction from the previous model’s 60 by 40 centimeters and nearly three kilograms. Starlink claims V5 consumes between 35 to 50 watts, down from 75 to 100 watts for V4.

However, Starlink V5 has a lower maximum download speed. While V4 can reach speeds of over 400 megabits per second, V5 is capped at 375 megabits per second, which may affect customers seeking the highest-tier service.

Starlink specifies that V5 is designed for stationary use, and the company continues to offer a separate, mini receiver for mobile applications. Elon Musk previewed a new version of the mobile model in early June, suggesting an updated version could be announced soon. Currently, new German customers receive the V4 model, as Starlink ramps up production of V5 for wider release in the coming weeks and months.
