NJ Meteorite Contains Life’s Building Blocks

A 1.35 kilogram meteorite crashed through the roof of a home in Hillsborough, New Jersey on July 16, 2024, and analysis by the SETI Institute revealed it contains the chemical building blocks of life. The rock entered the Earth’s atmosphere at around 52,000 kilometers per hour, creating a recorded pressure wave. The homeowner’s quick action to secure the fragments with gloves and foil prevented significant contamination.

Researchers determined the meteorite is a rare transitional class, and its internal structure shows evidence of past interaction with liquid water. They discovered concentrated salts within tiny mineral fractures, indicating saline fluids once circulated on its parent asteroid.

The meteorite also contains 1.76 percent carbon and measurable nitrogen, along with a complex mixture of amino acids and carboxylic acids considered essential for the origin of life. While the presence of these organic molecules doesn’t prove life existed on the asteroid, it supports the theory that asteroids delivered key chemical components to Earth during its early stages. Researchers continue to analyze the sample, accounting for minor terrestrial contamination.
