Enercity Builds 50 Megawatt Power-To-Heat Plant in Germany

Enercity is constructing a 50 megawatt power-to-heat plant in Hannover, Germany, to support the city’s coal exit and decarbonize district heating. The energy provider aims to relieve strain on electricity grids caused by increasing wind and solar production, absorbing surplus energy and converting it into heat for the district heating network.

Enercity already operates a 20 megawatt electric boiler at the Herrenhausen power plant, which it plans to expand to 26 megawatt. This new 50 megawatt facility will significantly increase the company’s power-to-heat capacity. The boilers can feed heat directly into the district heating network or store it for later use.

The company intends to replace its second coal-fired plant by the end of 2027, enabling a large portion of district heating to be generated climate-neutrally. Enercity is also planning another 100 megawatt power-to-heat plant in the Rodenbruch district.
