New Yorkers Seek German Citizenship Amid Uncertainty

In New York, a growing number of Jewish individuals are applying for German citizenship as descendants of those persecuted by the Nazis. Many view this process as a return to their roots and a form of securing their future.

The applications, based on a program for restitution, have increased sharply in recent years, from 734 in 2022 to 1771 in 2024, requiring applicants to document their family history and the persecution they endured. For some, obtaining German citizenship is a way to reconnect with a heritage lost during the Nazi era, while others cite concerns about the current political climate in the United States and a desire for a sense of security.

A 2021 law change broadened eligibility, allowing those who never initially held German citizenship due to persecution to apply. The ceremony took place on the German training ship Gorch Fock docked in New York, symbolizing reconciliation and acknowledgement of a return to ancestral lands.
