Niedersachsen’s Youth Fire Departments See Growth

In Niedersachsen, Germany, children’s and youth fire departments are experiencing a surge in membership. While volunteer organizations generally struggle with declining numbers, fire departments in the region report increasing interest from young people aged six to twelve.

Members participate in training exercises including relay races and simulated firefighting scenarios, preparing for competitions. The Bad Bevensen fire department currently has around 30 youth members, including five girls, and actively promotes its programs through social media and community events.

The Niedersächsische Kinder- und Jugendfeuerwehr association reports a total of 54,700 girl and boy members, a 2.5 percent increase since 2023. Officials emphasize the inclusive nature of these departments, noting a growing percentage of female members, reaching 36.5 percent, and a focus on utilizing each member’s strengths, regardless of physical ability. Beyond firefighting skills, the programs aim to instill discipline and teamwork.
