Rapper Teaches Democracy Through Music in Germany

Rapper Rico Montero and his organization, Heartbeat Edutainment, are engaging students in Frankfurt, Germany, with workshops that use music, dance, and art to foster civic participation. Montero, who grew up facing hardship when his mother fell ill, aims to inspire young people to understand the importance of democracy and become actively involved in shaping their communities.

The “Democracy. Make it!” project has already reached 124,000 children and young adults, utilizing unconventional methods to discuss complex concepts like human dignity and civic responsibility. Montero emphasizes engagement and self-expression, encouraging students to “go wild” with their ideas and participate in the democratic process.

The workshops culminate in student presentations of artwork, dance performances, and collaboratively written raps, fostering a sense of empowerment and collective action. Montero remains optimistic about the future of democracy in Germany, believing that the current generation is receptive to positive change.
