The study examined 61 adults using magnetic resonance imaging to map brain activity and identify preferences.
The team found a correlation between stronger activation in face-preferring areas of the lower temporal lobe and a tendency to immediately fixate on faces within an image. A similar connection existed for text elements, with those who quickly processed words showing greater activity in corresponding brain regions.
This suggests the brain processes preferred stimuli more precisely. People who focus on faces demonstrate a greater ability to distinguish them, while those who gravitate toward text tend to read faster.
