Wiesbaden Expands EV Charging Network with New Substation

ESWE Versorgung, Wiesbaden’s energy provider, is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure and recently began construction on a new substation to support the growing demand. The company currently operates nearly 1050 public charging points in Wiesbaden, a rate of growth that is the fastest among all district-free cities and counties in Germany. This expansion is part of a larger plan to install 800 new charging points by 2030, after winning a concession in 2023.

ESWE Versorgung has already surpassed an initial milestone, creating 446 new charging points at 151 locations. In 2025, these stations registered 238,000 charging operations, delivering a total of 4.7 gigawatt-hours of electricity.

The new substation, being built by Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz GmbH, will cost 39 million euros, with 20 million allocated to construction and 19 million to electrotechnical components. It is slated to begin operation in early 2031 and will utilize new, environmentally friendly switches that eliminate the use of the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride.
