KI Impacts Balkan Journalism: Opportunity & Risk

Why this is here: RTCG became the first public broadcaster in the region to introduce an ethical code for the use of artificial intelligence, aiming to establish standards for responsible implementation amidst growing competition for clicks and publishing speed.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into daily work for journalists across the Western Balkans. Newsrooms are using KI for tasks ranging from transcription to data analysis and multimedia content creation. The speed of KI adoption varies, with most newsrooms in the region using it to automate routines and process information.
Dejan Rakita, a journalist at Gerila in Bosnia and Herzegovina, notes that KI raises new questions for independent journalism, which already faces political and economic pressure. Radio Television Montenegro (RTCG) uses KI for support in production but maintains a strict separation between technology and editorial decisions, having also implemented an ethics code for its use.
Some media outlets view KI as a tool to enhance journalism, while others see it as a replacement for journalistic work. Experts also note that larger newsrooms with more resources benefit most from advanced KI tools, potentially widening the gap between media organizations.
