Scientists in Windischeschenbach, Germany, drilled a 9.101-meter deep borehole in the early 1990s to study the Earth’s crust. The Continental Tiefbohrung (KTB) project aimed to understand the planet’s structure, fluid movement deep underground, and the role of fractures in earthquakes. Located in the Bohemian Massif, an area of ancient continental crust, the site provided a unique opportunity to study processes typically found far below the surface.
