Why this is here: The discovery of three new frog species in Peru highlights the vast amount of biodiversity still unknown, even as existing species face increasing threats from human activity.

World Frog Day, observed on March 20, arrives as roughly 40% of amphibian species are at risk of extinction. Scientists describe around 150 new amphibian species annually. However, many immediately face threats from habitat loss, disease, and climate change.

Recent reports detail specific challenges. Seven rare galaxy frogs disappeared in India after being handled for photographs. Conservationists released 350 endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs into a California lake, hoping to prevent the species’ extinction.

Researchers also identified three new frog species in Peru’s Andes Mountains. They noted existing habitat loss from fire, agriculture, and cattle ranching in the region. One biologist stated some species may disappear before they are even named.
