Bear-Dar System Warns Arctic Communities of Approaching Polar Bears

Polar Bears International and Spotter Global developed Bear-dar, an AI-powered radar system, to alert Arctic communities to nearby polar bears. The system scans landscapes for movement and uses AI trained on footage from the Assiniboine Conservancy Park zoo in Winnipeg, Canada to identify bears.

In May, Bear-dar successfully detected a mother polar bear and her two cubs approaching a weather station in Eureka, allowing staff to guide the animals back to the sea ice. This technology addresses a growing concern as climate change causes sea ice to melt, driving polar bears onto land and increasing encounters with humans.

The team aims to improve accessibility and affordability, potentially offering text message alerts in the future. Successfully deploying this technology in harsh Arctic conditions remains a challenge, but the goal is to provide communities with a vital safety tool as human-polar bear interactions become more frequent.
