Oystercatchers Recover in North America After Near Extinction

Conservation groups funded protections for American Oystercatchers across North America, resulting in a 45% increase in the bird population since 2008. The species nearly disappeared from the East Coast at the beginning of the 20th century because of hunting and the collection of their eggs.

Nonprofits raised $10 million to support conservation efforts focused on beach nesting sites. These efforts included restricting vehicle access and establishing roped-off breeding areas.

The recovery of the oystercatcher demonstrates the positive impact of targeted conservation initiatives. Researchers continue to monitor populations and adapt strategies to ensure the long-term survival of this shorebird.
