Mayan Astronomer’s Name Deciphered After Centuries

Archaeologists in Guatemala identified the complete name of a Mayan astronomer and mathematician for the first time. Experts deciphered mural symbols at the San Bartolo-Xultun archaeological site, Mayan ruins on the border with Mexico dating from 400 BCE to 900 CE.

The researcher is named Sak Tahn Waax, which translates to “White-Chested Fox.” This discovery reveals a complete mathematical and astronomical formula created by Sak Tahn Waax, a unique attribution for a mathematician from the Classic Mayan period (250 to 900 CE).

The Ministry of Culture stated the decipherment was possible through the epigraphic analysis of over 50 mathematical and astronomical microtexts. Researchers found the formula among inscriptions from a structure potentially housing Mayan elites. The team translated 11 symbols, offering insight into the intersection of art, science, and daily life within the Mayan civilization.
