Europe Explores Life Without Pesticides

Researchers at France’s INRAE tested pesticide-free farming solutions for twelve years on experimental farms. The European Union aims to halve pesticide use by 2030, but sales remain around 350,000 tonnes annually across Europe, with France accounting for 80,000 tonnes.

INRAE’s trials demonstrate that eliminating pesticides is possible through significant changes to farming practices, specifically lengthening crop rotations to seven to nine years, adjusting planting times, reducing tillage, and utilizing resistant plant varieties. In 45% of cases, farmers earned between two and three times the French monthly net minimum wage (approximately 2955.86 to 4433.79 euros) and in 35% they earned more than three times that amount.

Biocontrol, utilizing natural predators and fostering biodiversity, shows promise but requires structural changes like planting hedges and reducing field sizes. Currently, biocontrol accounts for 12 to 15% of the phytosanitary market. Twenty-seven European programs involving 2000 researchers are working toward chemical-free agriculture by 2040.
