Europe Sees Air Quality Gains, Dolphins Gain Protection

Several organizations across Europe and beyond are reporting positive developments this week. In France, associations are urging the government to suspend hunting during heatwaves, citing the vulnerability of wildlife already stressed by climate change. Meanwhile, a French court ordered the state to strengthen protections for dolphins in the Bay of Biscay, aiming to limit accidental captures to 809 animals annually by the winter of 2026-2027.

Across the continent, air quality continues to improve due to reduced emissions from transport and industry, though heatwaves and fires still cause localized pollution spikes. Elsewhere, London is using beavers to help prevent flooding by restoring wetlands, and Barcelona will test an olive-pit asphalt that could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 76%.

Challenges remain, however. South Korea struggles to prepare for its 2027 ban on dog meat sales, and the World Health Organization notes significant global inequalities in access to blood transfusions.
