France Opens Inclusive Housing for Autistic Adults

In Vieille-Chapelle, France, the association Sourires d’Autistes opened 17 adapted apartments to help adults with autism gain independence. The project addresses a critical lack of housing options for this population. Residents can choose between private studio apartments and shared common spaces within three neighboring houses, fostering a balance of autonomy and community.

The homes incorporate features designed to support residents' needs, such as an “emotion bowl” to help individuals communicate their feelings. Fourteen of the seventeen apartments are currently occupied.

This initiative aims to provide a supportive environment for adults with autism, a group often overlooked by public policies. The association hopes to expand this model to other regions, offering more inclusive housing solutions and increased independence for adults on the autism spectrum.
